— The Land —

Uigshader Living Forest Project is based at Uigshader Woodland, about 3 miles west of Portree on the Isle of Skye. The land extends to about 85 hectares, and stretches just over a mile from the picturesque River Snizort in the west back toward Portree.
The woodland area is split in half by the Lon an Eireannach, a wee tributary river to the Snizort.
Formerly a commercial sitka spruce plantation, the woodland was clear felled several years ago with exception of a few patches. Although in some areas we are witnessing natural regeneration of trees including birch, hazel, willow and rowan, we are planting an additional 30,000 native trees.
ULFP have been working alongside Reforesting Scotland, Scottish Forestry, Peatland Action and other bodies to develop a sustainable management plan for the site and to ensure the conservation reflects the priority habitats from the Skye and Lochalsh biodiversity plan. We have surveyed the land and drawn up a restoration plan.
Our Core objectives for the land are:
Sustainability - Ecology - Community
The map indicates the areas for conservation including areas to be planted and those that have been assessed as deep peat in need of restoration. Below you can access the final report on the deep peat, written by Alistair Headley and was funded by SNH through Peatland Action.
